Jeremy Howard Awarded
BIF Frank Baker Scholarship

HOUSTON, Texas. (April 20, 2012) — The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) awarded Christina Weber a Frank Baker Scholarship during the organization's 44th annual meeting and research symposium in Houston, Texas, April 18-21.

Howard is a graduate student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), studying under Dr. Matthew Spangler. Howard is studying the phenotypic and genetic variation associated with heat and cold tolerance and its effects on various production traits. He first earned his bachelor's degree in animal science, with a minor in genetics, from Iowa State University (ISU).

He currently serves as a research assistant at UNL, and he has interned with Progressive Swine Technologies and Iowa Select Farms. He was also a research assistant for the ISU Swine Testing Station.

The late Frank H. Baker played a key leadership role in helping establish the BIF in 1968. Each year since 1994, two deserving graduate students have been recognized for their winning essays.

The Baker Scholarship Award is a $1,000 travel scholarship. Applicants were asked to write an essay, and all submitted essays were judged by a panel of animal science faculty. Howard was recognized at an awards luncheon Friday, April 20, in Houston.
