Jerry Taylor Honored with Continuing Service Award

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (June 14, 2013) — The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) honored Jerry Taylor with the Continuing Service Award during the organization's 45th annual meeting and research symposium in Oklahoma City, Okla., June 12-15, 2013. The award recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to the industry.

Taylor currently holds the position of Curators’ Professor of genetics and animal sciences and Wurdack Chair of animal genomics at the University of Missouri. His early education took place in mathematics at the University of Adelaie. Subsequent to that Jerry completed a doctorate at the University of New England in Australia.

Fortunately for the U.S. agri-genomics and genetics industry, Taylor found his way to the United States as an associate professor at Texas A&M in 1986. Since that time he had influenced the animal genetics arena by producing a steady stream of well-trained doctoral students, as well as significant research in the arena of agri-genomics and bio-informatics. He is currently the primary investigator for a $5 million USDA grant focused on the genetic improvement of feed efficiency.

At the BIF annual meeting, he or his graduate students have presented during general and committee sessions. Taylor continues to push the beef cattle performance industry to rethink the use phenotypic and genetic data as the industry evaluates animals.

When not doing his favorite hobby, science, you can find Jerry and his wife, Kristen enjoying the outdoors either on the back of a motorcycle or on the water at Lake of the Ozarks.

Continuing Service award winners have made a major contributions to BIF past, present and future.  This includes serving on the Board of Directors, speaking at BIF conventions, working on BIF Guidelines and other behind the scene activities. As BIF is a totally volunteer organization it is the contribution of time and passion for the beef cattle industry that keeps BIF moving forward.

Taylor was presented the BIF Continuing Service Award at a luncheon Friday,June 14, in Oklahoma City.
