Greiner Presented Continuing Service Award

BROOKINGS, South Dakota — The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) presented Scott Greiner, Christiansburg, Virginia, a BIF Continuing Service Award June 19 during the group’s annual meeting and symposium in Brookings, South Dakota.

Continuing Service Award winners have made major contributions to the BIF organization. This includes serving on the board of directors, speaking at BIF conventions, working on BIF guidelines and other behind-the-scenes activities. As BIF is a volunteer organization, it is this contribution of time and passion for the beef cattle industry that moves BIF forward.

Greiner is an extension beef and sheep specialist at Virginia Tech. In this position, he provides research-based education and outreach on the science and application of beef and sheep production to livestock producers, extension agents and allied-industry professionals. He received his bachelor’s degree in animal science at Iowa State University, his master’s degree in animal science at Michigan State University and returned to Iowa State to obtain his doctorate in animal science (meat science).

He has devoted his time to the agriculture industry by serving in various roles, including being a member of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) beef production research committee, the U.S. Beef Breeds Council, Ultrasound Guidelines Council, the Virginia Department of Agriculture Animal Identification Working Group, a Virginia Cattlemen’s Association Educational advisor, a Virginia Sheep Producers Association Educational advisor, a Virginia Sheep Industry Board Educational advisor and as the superintendent of the National Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest.

“Scott first became involved in BIF as a Ph.D. student at Iowa State, where he was involved in the early research with carcass ultrasound,” says Darrh Bullock, BIF eastern region secretary. “Specifically, this included the establishment of policies and procedures for centralized ultrasound processing, and assembly of data for breed association genetic evaluations along with standards for ultrasound technician proficiency and certification.”

Through the years Greiner has been a speaker at the BIF annual meeting and symposium on several occasions and a regular attendee. He was on the organizing committee for the 1999 annual meeting hosted in Virginia.

Greiner and his wife, Lori, have two daughters — Kaylee and Leah.

More than 500 beef producers, academia and industry representatives attended the organization’s 51st annual convention. BIF’s mission is to help improve the industry by promoting greater acceptance of beef cattle performance evaluation.

The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) is an organization dedicated to coordinating all segments of the beef industry — from researchers and producers to retailers — in an effort to improve the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of beef production. The organization was initiated almost 70 years ago to encourage the use of objective measurements to evaluate beef cattle. Continuing the tradition, BIF is now the clearinghouse for developing standardized programs and methodologies for recording of performance data for all traits, from birth weights to carcass traits. Its three-leaf-clover logo symbolizes the link between industry, extension and research.
