Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., and Angus Productions Inc. (API) are pleased to bring you online coverage of the 2003 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) annual conference for the second year in a row. Scheduled for May 28-31, 2003, in Lexington, Ky., the conference will address a very timely topic that has touched a large portion of the beef industry over the last few years — surviving environmental challenges.

Wednesday night’s opening session will feature the popular symposium sponsored by the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) and will explore recent advances in synchronization technology and the economic advantage of synchronization in beef cattle production. Thursday’s program topics will concentrate on management considerations of beef production in adverse environments, while looking at the potential use of genomics as a future selection tool in identifying cattle that will perform in harsh conditions. The program on Friday will look at specific targets for the beef industry and how to use available tools to make genetic change to meet these targets. In addition, BIF committees will address emerging technologies; selection decisions; cow herd efficiency; producer applications; genetic predictions; and live animal, carcass and end-point measures.

Before the conference begins, we invite you to download registration materials, and preview the event schedule and speaker bios. Archived files from the 2002 BIF meeting are also posted, and audio files, proceedings and previous award winners can be downloaded and reviewed. Link to BIF’s home page to learn more about the organization, and link to event sponsors the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association and the University of Kentucky.

During the conference, we’ll update the site with proceedings and overviews of the presentations, announcements of the 2003 BIF honorees, coverage of the Kentucky beef industry tour and reports discussions that take place during the event.

We hope you enjoy the conference.
